Rough Cut finally done!

Woo Hoo!

A 90 minute rough cut has finally been reconnected and I’m outputting a copy to DVD right now!

The reconnect between Sally’s EDL in Paris and our media here looked like it was going to be a right royal pain in the arse – but we fiddled and fuddled and we have a full rough cut.

Next stage now is to get the composer – Phil Strong – to compose to the rough cut, and Bryce Hallett – our animation/post-production graphics person – to do any video compositing and effects.

Got to send the copies out next to CBC and Canal D!

I think a screening is in order too – expose the film to some critical eyes and see what else we need to sharpen the cut more.

All very exciting!!!!

And it means some money if the broadcasters accept it as “the” rough cut…

Getting footage

The whole process of finding illustrative examples of Peep has been interesting.  We used Youtube videos, amateur porn sites, vimeo videos, went the traditional route of stock houses and found a whole new paradigm of media management and stock sources to help us with the film.

My favourite stock came from YouTube videos.  It’s huge democratic world on YouTube – democratic in that most people can access it and add to it – rather than it be put through a gatekeeper (which is what the usual broadcast medium makes sure is there).  It’s free too!  We found people confessing their secrets, people drunk confessing their secrets, and people showing us their secrets… it’s wonderfully “peep”.

It also allows us the ability to show ourselves off and show our creations off – whether it’s a son’s latest clay pot, our new song, our new reimagining of a song, or it’s a persona we create to entertain ourselves and each other.

We ended up really loving some of the web’s cewebrities – Maangi who cooks Korean food in her own channel, Myles who is the “it” kid for social media in the UK and Peter Chao – the Chinese Guy from Vancouver – who is playing with stereotype and making us all laugh.

The great thing is that they were all very generous with their permission to include their footage and videos for our film and I want to say “A BIG THANK YOU!” to you all.

I will be keeping everyone in the loop (or at least trying to keep everyone in the loop!).

Next – Sally is editing in Paris, I’m uploading footage, she’s sending me the EDL of the film based on a mirror of our footage, and then somehow we’re going to re-connect her new EDL with the footage we have here.  And then I’m going to figure out how to burn the DVD for our commissioning editors to watch.

Meanwhile, Sally’s going to give birth…. Ouch!

Producer Blog is BACK!!!!

Hey there,

After a looooonggg pause, it’s time for me to start blogging here again.

So, we’re in the last throws of the rough cut edit and the film is now 90 minutes long.

We’re planning a feature film length – looking for some distribution in theatres and for festivals – and then a broadcast cut down to 42 minutes.

We’re hoping to submit the film to Toronto International Film Festival.  We wanted to go to Hot Docs, but we simply weren’t ready… that’s the conundrum filmmakers and producers face - the festivals aren’t timed to one’s production schedule and the production schedule can’t often be timed to festivals.

Sally, the director and other producer is now in Paris.  Ready to put the finishing trims to the rough cut and also about to deliver a baby.  She needs to pop out the film before the infant and I’m anxiously pacing and praying that the baby will come either on time or late.

Hal’s busy continuing his quest for peep and I think we ought to put up a lifecast again for the site…

Any ideas what you might like to see?  A shot of the office? a shot out of the window?  Paint dry anyone?
