Kids Do Amateur Porn, Sex Offend Themselves :comments

So I’ve been meaning to write a post on this for a while: in the new world of Peep, teenagers are being arrested and charged with child pornography for taking pictures or videos of themselves and sending them to friends via cell phone and email. The poster child for this is a 15 year old girl in Ohio who was arrested for “sending nude photos of herself to other minors and was facing felony criminal charges for illegally using a minor in nudity-oriented material and for possession of criminal tools.” The teen could have been forced to register as a sexual offender annually for ten years. After public outcry, charges were dropped due to an undisclosed agreement with her family. In another incident in Michigan police did a drug-like raid and confiscated dozens of cell phones that all contained pictures of a 14 year old girl’s face and genitals (she, of course, willingly sent the pictures to a friend who passed them on to a friend who etc. etc.) Then in Florida a 16 year old and a 17 year old were arrested for basically taking pictures of themselves having sex with each other and sending the pictures only to each other via email.

Now if we’re going to criminalize peep sex, we’ll end up arresting a lot of people. An online poll reported on by Salon found that 20 percent of teens and 33 percent of young adults age 20 to 26 have sent or posted online nude or semi-nude photos or videos of themselves. Wow. Better build a new special jail to house all those hormone addled teens and their webcams.

But where do all these people, young and otherwise (as some of my previous blog posts have suggested) get the idea to take and exchange racy photos? As we shift ever more permanently from pop culture to Peep culture we also compete for time and attention with each other – who will look at me, who will pay attention to my life? Meanwhile, everything from Paris Hilton sex videos to Lindsay Lohan no-panties limo exit shots, tells us that the one sure fire way we have to ensure we’ll draw a lot of eyeballs is to throw sex into the mix. And yet, in many cases, what society continually demonstrates as a legitimate strategy to gain attention is considered illegal and immoral.

This is one of the more fascinating elements of Peep culture. It’s the emerging new normal of self exposure rubbing up against old school morality. Nowhere is this more evident and absurd than in cases where teenagers are charged with making child pornography of themselves.

Here’s Lindsay Lohan with some guy. A few minutes online and I found about 10 sites devoted to celebrity “upskirt” photos.

Hal,

I find the obsession to control sex fascinating, particularly because we live in a society that simultaneously recognizes sexuality in youth as natural and seeks to suppress any emerging behaviors. I am currently helping my parents “sex-proof” the internet for three teenagers—yeah right. I think it’s very important that they understand and explore for themselves, albeit in a healthy way. Provided that safety is considered, exploring with other teenagers is a positive step, in my opinion.

That’s how I learned, at least. So great blog. It’s appreciated.

Have a great holiday!

Yours,

Simply ridiculous. Long gone are the days of finding copies of Playboy or Penthouse between the mattresses of North American teen’s bedrooms (and thank goodness for that). The internet has opened up an entirely new mode of sex education for this generation (from safe sex practices to dangerous dildos made in China) previously unavailable to ours (the prudes that we were, right, Hal?). That current law enforcement attempts to criminalize teens for their “normal” behavior, says more about the archaic state of our laws than it does about peep culture. If there is a will, there is a way: no matter the technology – cell phones, computers – people will always find a way to exchange on a social/sexual level.

I really do thank you for posting this interesting article on what I know is going on in the “teenage population” (as I am part of it). I have taken part in the act of sending pictures and videos of myself, exploring myself in that sexual manner, alongside another woman similar to my age. As far as being arrested for it? Man, that really seems kinda harsh! I had no idea it was illegal! Pretty glad I didn’t get caught then…!
But I believe this entire new generation of communication and accessibility via the internet and cellphones is really important. I know, as a contributor, it is a big part in helping my generation find ourselves both sexually and mentally. Weather it be through sharing pictures with someone who be close with us, or searching up a video online, the internet really is ushering in a new way of education.
I think your article really does put a truth behind this entire incident. There is nothing illegal about finding yourself, right? So, why should this be any different?

You know I’m agains pornography but it seems to me the rules are two strict. They made a sensation and ruined the girl’s life. Well, she is not yet conscious in what she was doing at that time. But it is a pity that this story will remain an earmark during all her life. Recently I’ve watched a film The White Ribbon (it is easy to find it at rapidshare SE http://rapidpedia.com ). It is a very unusual thing. Well, it wsa a time before World War I. One boy mastrubated and he felt very guity for it. He told his father about it and the father punished him. Well, after this film I came to the conclusion that these are women who should bring up children and punish them when they want. When it is a woman that brings the child up she surrounds him with love but if man do, the main thing for them are some moral norms and discipline.
