Zadie’s Jokes

Over the weekend I went to Montreal to visit my ailing grandfather, in and out of the hospital with a bad heart and water in his lungs and who knows what else.
He’s 94 years old. The first day we were there, he was pretty confused. The second day, he’d recovered some and was back to his old self, groping the nurse, and telling me five jokes in a row in a mixture of Yiddish and English. Here’s one (I’m paraphrasing): Moishe and Davie both say the egg belongs to them. They fight about the egg. Finally they go to see the great rabbi. They each make their case. The great rabbi ponders the situation. Finally, he tells them: The egg belongs to…THE HEN!
Zadie is a holdover from another world. I left Montreal wondering if I would see him alive again.
